Ever found yourself desperately looking for a car locksmith? Losing their car key is a situation that most people find themselves in, sooner or later. If Murphy’s Law is anything to go by, it generally happens at the worst possible time.
Like when you’re miles away from a spare key, for instance, and you’re running late for a meeting. Or worse, you get locked out of your car, with its engine running and your cell phone, wallet or handbag all inside. There are only a handful of ways to solve or avoid such problems, and this article describes all of those methods.
The first and simplest method is to always carry a spare key on your person. Not in handbag, wallet, or the glove box in your car, but on your person. This is easier said than done. First off, it’s easy to forget to keep transferring the key to your latest set of clothes.
Secondly, depending on the type of attire, it may not always be possible to accommodate a key in your clothing. This is true of many types of clothing for women, especially if the key is a large one. The only way around this is to physically wear the key, by stringing it on a chain around your neck, for example.
However, this too can be difficult to do with many dress styles. Wearing a hard and sharp object is also likely to injure you if you’re involved in any sort of fall or mishap. We can see already that our first method is not very practical.
Another method is to learn how to pick one of the locks on your car doors. In short, you need to become a car locksmith yourself. With a little practice, this is actually quite doable, but only with some of the older, simple locks. Locks on modern cars are quite advanced, and generally too complicated to pick with the skills and tools of an amateur.
Still, if your car has very basic locks such as wafer-tumbler locks, you can learn to pick them. All you need is a tension wrench and a pick. You can use a flat blade or a thin flat screwdriver as a tension wrench. Any thin and reasonably firm wire, bobby clip or hairpin-clip can be used as a pick. It just needs to be bent slightly at one end.
Picking takes practice and skill. Reading a lock picking guide may help. However, remember that it is illegal to pick other people’s locks, regardless of your intention. Also, repeated raking attempts may damage the pins or cylinder mechanism. This being the case, the most convenient and sensible option is to hire a car locksmith.
Their key origination services will create a new key for your lock even if you’ve lost all your copies. They can even unlock a sophisticated electronic lock found on modern cars if you’ve lost its transponder key. Remember to always hire only a professionally licensed car locksmith, as unlicensed locksmiths may scam you.
